About Us
In
On April 1, 2010, Stapeley became part of the Wesley Enhanced Living
family of continuing care retirement communities. Wesley Enhanced
Living traces its roots back to 1888, sharing a long and proud
history of ministering to Philadelphia seniors. The union between
Stapeley and WEL furthers each organization’s mission to care for
and serve the needs of the aging throughout the city of
Philadelphia.
The Quaker Tradition
The Stapeley campus was originally built in 1904 as the Boarding
Home for the Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting. The original building,
on its six-acre site, was a gift from Anna T. Jeanes. The community
was founded on Quaker principles of honesty, integrity and the worth
of every human being. It is built on ground considered sacred by the
Lennape and Iriquois Tribes and was a stop on the Underground
Railroad before The Civil War.
Opened in 1904, Stapeley was offered as a haven to Friends and those
who shared the Quaker beliefs and traditions. Today Wesley Enhanced
Living at Stapeley is a community with a wide variety of beliefs and
cultures dedicated to those same Quaker traditions.
