About Us

The Quaker Tradition
Stapeley was built in 1904 as the Boarding Home for the Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting. The original building, on its six-acre site, was a gift from Anna T. Jeanes. Stapeley is founded on Quaker principles of honesty, integrity and the worth of every human being. It is built on ground considered sacred by the Lennape and Iriquois Tribes and was a stop on the Underground Railroad before The Civil War.

Opened in 1904, Stapeley was offered as a haven to Friends and those who shared the Quaker beliefs and traditions. Today Stapeley is a community with a wide variety of beliefs and cultures dedicated to those same Quaker traditions.

Our Location . . . A Setting for Life
Stapeley is located in Historic Germantown, a Northwest neighborhood in Philadelphia with a 300 year history of diversity and a rich variety of shops, places of worship and historic treasures. Germantown is a neighborhood in which past and future meet to create a unique way of life. Like Germantown, Stapeley is a community where William Penn’s idea of a “Greene Countrie Towne” is realized. Within this urban oasis, residents and visitors will find a natural environment that includes a small hardwood forest, winding pathways and a variety of birds and wildlife. All this is only nine miles from the arts, music and activity of center city Philadelphia. At Stapeley you can enjoy the best of urban and suburban life.

A Caring Community
The Stapeley tradition of caring is more than meets the eye. The continuum of services, the residential apartments, the quality health care, these are the obvious. It is the spirit that sets Stapeley apart. It is the spirit that prompts families and visitors to remark, “...the halls of Stapeley are resonant with kindness and love.”

Our commitment reflects our Quaker roots, and maintains the dignity and self-worth of every person.
